An independent record of the workings of government.
The Government Signal publishes two things: long-form papers, written and edited at length on questions of policy, administration and oversight; and a free newsletter, a shorter companion that lands periodically.
There is no shortage of commentary on Australian politics. There is a real shortage of patient writing on how the machinery of government actually behaves over time.
The papers
Papers are the substantial work — written and edited over weeks, typically 15 to 30 pages, on a single question of public administration, policy or oversight. The aim is not to break news but to build, paper by paper, a clearer picture of how the country is actually being run.
Each paper is available as both a web-readable essay and a printable PDF. Subscribers get the full PDF for $8/month or $72/year. Non-members can buy any single paper for $6, with a free 2-page preview of every one.
The newsletter
The newsletter is a shorter, free companion to the papers. It lands periodically with a sharper take on something currently moving, and points readers to recent papers and what is coming next. There is no fee for it, and never will be — sign up at any time.
What we don't do
No advertising. No sponsored posts. No partisan affiliation. The publication is supported by its subscribers and by the occasional single-paper purchase, and nothing else.
